So as I’m walking out of Tim Hortons near Rideau Mall this morning, some homeless guy comes up and asks for spare change. I normally just ignore homeless people, but I thought what the hell and gave him the seven cents change I’d gotten from Tim Hortons. He looks at it, counts it, grunts, “That’s it?” and walks away without thanking me or anything.
I despise people who beg for money. The fact that I get swarmed every morning when I’m waiting for the bus is one of the things I hate about living downtown. I try not to be ignorant and assume, “well they’ll just use it on cigarettes”, but really, to me giving a homeless person in Ottawa money is just a waste. Especially in Canada, where there’s literally endless opportunity and endless amount of support. There’s so many better ways in which that money could be spent and so many people who need it more. I find it hard to have any sympathy for them, especially since most of the time it’s guys in their 20s-40s, who look completely healthy. So fuck off. If you want more than seven cents, go get it yourself.
